History

Sunny isles history

Sunny Isles actually got named and started in 1920 by Harvey Baker Graves, a private investor, who called it the ‘American Riviera’, but it was still known as North Miami Beach up till 1931. It continued to develop bit by bit with wealthy investors and developers seeing the potential of the land. During the 1950’s and 1960’s more than 30 motels were built up along Collins Avenue including Ocean Palm, the first two-story motel in the U.S. Designed by Norman Giller in 1948 it was developed and owned by the Gingolds for the following 45 years and was the springboard for Sunny Isles economic development. Tourists came from all over to vacation in exotic themed motels along what was known as “Motel Row”. During the real estate boom of the 2000’s many of the currently standing high-rises were built on the beach side to replace the historic motels. Construction still continues apace today, for example the Mansions at Acqualina is one of the biggest projects, situated right beside its predecessor, Acqualina Resort.
